Buying Rustic Furniture
From simplicity and informality associated with crudeness and cheapness, the meaning of "rustic" has now evolved to elegance, sophistication and trend. Today, even the biggest names in Hollywood are into rustic furniture. Steven Spielberg, for example!
Aside from being affordable, rustic furniture can add texture to your home. And this, it does through the relaxing mood brought about by its naturalness, spontaneity, homey flavor and casual elegance it embodies. Rustic furniture is classified based on its material. Usually, it is handcrafted and made of wood or wrought iron.
In buying rustic furniture, there are simple things that must be considered:
First, one has to consider his/her budget. How much does he/she has? How much is to be spent for the furniture? This would be one important factor that will limit the purchaser's decision. Generally, furniture made of hardwood is more expensive compared to those made of a combination of different woods.
Another limiting factor that should not be disregarded is the space. Where is the furniture to be placed? How many other furniture would be share space in the room? The purchaser would want to take your floor plan measurements first before buying his/her furniture. This may be a little inconvenient for him/her but definitely less inconvenient than finding out that he/she would have to stand while eating because there’s no more room for chairs in the dining room.
The third factor to be considered is the style. Does the room have to be purely rustic or mixed? Remember, it does not always have to be pure. Sometimes, just a simple touch of rustic could make more difference. Another tip is to imagine how the desired furniture would look in your room.
Even with a tight budget, quality should never be sacrificed. There will always be a lot of advertisements, garage sales, second-hand shops and antique shops offering good quality furniture out there ready to satisfy your hunger for rustic flavor.
In connection with the quality is how the furniture is made. Because wooden and handcrafted furniture do not spring out of nowhere as they are, different parts have to be bonded together to achieve the desired form. Usually, this is done using special glues and long staples. Before buying furniture, the purchaser must first check how each part is bonded to another. This will minimize the possible waste of time, money and possible future accidents that could arise from unsatisfactory bonding.
A wise purchaser always checks for the safety of his/her purchases. All furniture must be tested for stability. All rustic furniture should be balanced even when rocked. Tables and chairs should have leveled legs. One must be cautious with some types of furniture such as the cantilevered type, three-legged pieces, wall pieces, as well as those with sharp-edges. Furniture with sharp edges is particularly dangerous for the children, elderly and those with visual impairment.
Tests can be done to determine how well a furniture functions. The test for drawers is by opening and closing it. Drawers must of course, fit the cabinet. It should be moved in and out of the cabinet with ease. Also, make sure that the drawer has a drawer stop. This prevents the drawer from sliding out of its frame.
The ultimate test for chairs is simply, to sit on it. By doing so, the purchaser could assess the overall quality of the chair: how sturdy it is, how comfortable it is, and the appropriateness of height, angle and depth of the seat. He/she could also check if there are bumps present or if cushions are secured.
Furniture finishes should feel smooth to touch. Surface finishes are easily scratched. How well furniture is preserved or how well it is finished can be determined by its marks. When buying rustic furniture, one must be very keen in observing scratches or marks.
The considerations in buying rustic furniture are not so many. One just has to think of the satisfaction the term "rusticity" means. Today, it means casual… and sophisticated.
