Tips on Rustic Decorating

All designers and even common people have a preconception of the terms used in describing different houses. For example, colonial, contemporary, post-modern, Victorian, industrial, etc. - each one is different from the other. Probably the most misunderstood of all in home decoration is the rustic decorating style.

The term rustic in most cases gives images of rough-hewn beams, cabins, farmhouse or cottages. Those examples are truly rustic but the term rustic is not limited to them.

A rustic style appeals to those who prefer a warm and very individual decorating style. Rustic decorating may be used with conjunction to other styles such as classic, contemporary and art deco. Rustic decorating adds a certain charm and flavor to any style.

People are generally attracted to certain styles, but often a rustic decor can be chosen and then be fitted to them. Incorporating a rustic decor to other styles is stamping your own style to your home.

Here are some things you may incorporate into your own style:

1. Coat hooks
2. Key holders
3. Paper holders
4. Towel rings or bars
5. Mirrors
6. Welcome Signs
7. Letter holders
8. Bookends
9. Fireplace screen
10. Business card holder
11. Mailbox tops

The list goes on, notice most of these items are small. Small items with fine details conjure that cozy rustic ambience.

Generally, those in the city are using rustic decorating to enhance the warmth and the charm of their homes. The stressful life in the city will be well muffled with a rustic decor because of the more calm environment it gives a home.

The urban folks will probably not convert their apartments or homes in the city to a log cabin. But they probably will maintain a more or less urban décor. The sprinkling of this décor with a rustic charm is enough for them.
