The Many Faces of Rustic Beds
Rustic beds are considered a modern trend, yet they basically appeared when the first beds were created and then evolved and transformed into a valuable craft and art. Coming from different cultures, belonging to different parts of the world, the rustic beds' versions and accessories are unlimited.
The range of rustic beds includes: log beds, day beds, sleigh beds, oversized beds, beds with wood rails, metal cross supports, finished or unfinished, Victorian inspired, varnished or rough or antique look-alikes beds.
Besides their textures, forms, sizes and purpose, the rustic beds also vary in styles, as they represent come from numerous sources and have distinctive backgrounds. Generally, rustic beds are made of both new and re-claimed timber, pine and oak, which can give both the rough aspect and the elegant touch. The English and French rustic beds are characterized by heaviness and classic lines, but have massive aspects.
The Mexican rustic beds have a more unfinished look than the delicate French ones, yet they are both called rustic style. The Europeans valued more the principles of the high aristocracy, who cultivated the taste for fine and finished touches. The Mexican crafters use the barn and teaks for the rustic beds, while the Europeans use fine pine. The Mexican rustic beds' background is found in the Mexican lifestyle and occupation, where gifted peasants and farmers are representative.
The Asian rustic beds are best represented by the antique Chinese beds, which have low platforms, are made of bamboo and are either plain or highly decorated. Indian beds are sometimes similar to throne’s shape and in many cases, they include dark metal canes in the foot and hardboards.
Many furniture manufactures offer a wide spectrum of separate bed pieces, like headboards, footboards and mattresses which follow the rustic style. These can easily be added to a regular non-country bed and transform it into a rustic bed. Besides these wooden items, the great amount of rustic inspired bedding and wool covers offers numerous possibilities for an ordinary bed, which doesn't have to be exchanged, but just improved. The thick and warm covers for the rustic beds have floral or geometrical motifs, like earthy coloured lines and rhombuses. The bed lingerie is thin and fluid, made of simple lustreless cotton, plain white or lightly coloured. Added pillows in different orange and cream colours on the bed increase the level of country style and cosiness of the room.
