Furnishing A Rustic Cabin

So, you want to add an interest to your home? Want to provide some texture to your castle? Why not give your house a rustic cabin look? Rustic furnishings can add some texture and interest in your home with style and charm.

Before, rustic often used to mean "cheap and rickety," but now rustic means stylish, trendy, and sophisticated. Many noted Hollywood celebrities like Sharon Stone and Steven Spielberg even have their own rustic homes. With polished logs, beautiful woods, and exquisite charm, rustic furnishings have become one of the most popular home styles today. Surprisingly, it has remained affordable, despite its popularity.

Rustic homes are here to stay.

Here are some tips to achieve your desired rustic look:

  • Rustic furniture means textural. So you might just want to embellish your room with just the right amount of rustic elements. A room full of rustic furniture might be too much, so maybe a few pieces could be better. Allow each item to stand out in the room. You could put some chairs made of willow around the old oak table of yours. Or you might want to include rustic chairs near the fireplace. Add some texture in your rooms, tables, and chairs.
  • Put rustic pillows and cushions in chairs. Visually, these will lighten up your chairs, giving that comfortable and relaxed look. It will give your chairs a very homey and cozy aura.
  • If you have a traditionally-designed house, you could still provide it with a rustic look.  The master bedroom can have an elegant canopy bed made of willow. This will give your room that country look with contemporary elegance. Rooms can have pieces of rustic furniture such as chairs and tables.
  • Accentuate your house with rustic pieces. Try adding rustic coat trees, mirrors, tables, and other accessories to accentuate the rooms in your house. These items will give your house a rustic feel, without you completely overhauling your whole house. Rustic pieces will give a different texture in a house that is, for example, formally and traditionally designed.
  • Rustic is also great outside the house. In your garden or just outside your home, try putting accent rustic pieces. There are several rustic chairs, trellis items, arbors, among others, available in the market that could complement well with your garden. Gardens look better with pieces of rustic furniture.
  • A rustic dining table may be the perfect accent in your kitchen or in your dining room. Enjoy rustic furnishings does not mean you have to live in a cabin in a faraway forest. For example, you could accentuate your dining room or kitchens with rustic tables and chairs. Try putting antique cabinets or drawers. These will give the room a rustic appeal, charm, and a textured flavor to interiors whether you live in a city apartment and or in a country house.
  • Shop around for rustic furniture.  Antique furniture is a permanent element in rustic furnishing. So look for antique furniture, especially if it is handcrafted. Always keep an open eye for reproductions of antique furniture, as these are varied interpretations of rustic finishing. Look for furniture that are made of wicker, oak, and pine. They are rustic classics.
  • Homespun textiles are good in your house. Vintage laces and fabrics are also elegant accents in the house.
  • Use natural wood, tile, flagstone, or painted wood in the floor. Accentuate the floor with rugs that are hooked or braided, floor cloths, or folkish dhurries.
  • Windows could be more rustic if you put wooden blinds or shutters. Complete the look with soft balloon shades or café curtains.
  • You could find your own rustic accessories. Sea shells, smooth rocks, pinecones, moss, and others will give your house a rustic feel. Put elegant bowls full of pinecones, gourds, and apples in tables. Vases and bottles could be filled with evergreen boughs and twigs.
  • Add rustic charm by putting classic rustic accessories. These are dried flowers, baskets, quilts, urns, among others.
  • Complement your rooms with textured walls. Walls that are hand-plastered give you that rustic charm. Before, hand-plastering is outright dismissed by homeowners, because it comes with less perfect results. But, today, hand-plastering has become trendy, charming, and simple, despite all the "mistakes." The texture walls will give you the feeling that you are in a rustic farmhouse or country house.
