Maintenance of Country Style Curtains

Country style curtains can be made partly or completely out of cotton, lace, wool, and voile. Cotton is used mostly for the kitchen country style curtains and it usually has applications on the fabric. Lace and translucent voile are for the Victorian bedrooms and wool or woven plaid fit best in a country cottage.

One of the problems that might come up when taking care of the country style curtains is that sometimes people use them for their summerhouses, which they visit once a year. During this time, the curtains accumulate dirt and dust, even more than regular objects in the house, as they are situated near the window and they are usually in really light colors. A curtain should be washed every three months, but if this is made of soft white cotton, it might need more often washes. Generally, all slightly delicate textiles are the ones that allow dirt to be visible. The curtains should be washed at a temperature of 56 degrees and above. This is not much effort, but you also have clean the dust weekly by using a vacuum machine at the lowest intensity; you can leave them hanging vertically, there is no need to take them down.

Most of the country style curtains can be washed using the washing machine. Instead using the drying, it is better to hang the wet curtains to prevent wrinkles and ironing. The really large or heavy curtains, like the wool ones should be washed in the bathtub, to prevent damaging the washing machine. Use scented balm after washing the curtains; this will intensely spread in the entire house after hanging the curtains back. The lined curtains should be better taken to professional dry cleaning.

There is a small chance that these country style curtains would get sun-rotten. You should check the backside of the curtain before washing it, to make sure this didn’t happen. If it did, this is irreparable. Also, there is a higher chance that the backside color of the curtain tends to fade away because of the sun action, while the window is opened. This happens to bright intense colors, usually made of synthetic textiles or cotton and it is also visible on the appliquéd ones.

The rusty rings of the country style curtains should be either cleaned one by one by brushing them with cooking bicarbonate to get a really shiny look, or you can boil them in water with vinegar. Each country style curtain should have a label with maintenance instructions and you should check it before the first washing procedure.
